'Captain America: The Winter Solider' directors Joe and Anthony Russo sign three-year first look deal with Sony

With all their commitments with Marvel, one would think directors Joe and Anthony Russo have their hands tied firmly for the next couple years. Guess not, however, as the filmmakers behind Captain America: The Winter Solider and the upcoming Captain America: Civil War just signed a three-year first-look deal with Sony.

The Hollywood Reporter notes the Sony Pictures Entertainment deal starts in April. While details are vague, especially in consideration of Sony and Marvel's recent deal, these projects seem to be in addition to the Russos' work on the upcoming Captain America movie and quite possibly calling the shots on Avengers: Infinity War Part 1 and 2.

“Joe and Anthony Russo are terrifically exciting filmmakers with a sensibility that matches the tastes of audiences worldwide,” Doug Belgard, Columbia Pictures President, said in the statement.

This deal could apply for any variety of genre projects, as the Russos were versed in comedies for years before they became a hot commodity in the blockbuster world after they helmed the 2014 superhero sequel. Both directors also worked together on films like You, Me and Dupree and shows like Arrested Development, Community and Happy Endings, just to name a few. Joe Russo, meanwhile, also recently directed the second episode of Marvel's new series Agent Carter.

“We’re thrilled to make a home at Sony Pictures, and to be partnering with the entire team,” said the Russo brothers in the statement. “The studio has created an environment that is not only collaborative, but truly filmmaker-friendly and we’re excited to begin developing both new and ambitious material with them.”

Meanwhile, over at the Marvel/Sony camp, the studios apparently just hired Drew Goddard, the filmmaker behind The Cabin in the Woods and Sony's seemingly defunct Spider-Man spin-off The Sinister Six, to write and direct their upcoming 2017 Spider-Man reboot. Spidey makes his first appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the Russos' next movie, set to hit theaters on May 6, 2016.
