Will Forte says ‘MacGruber 2′ is his number one priority

Despite not doing too well at the box office, it looks like a sequel to MacGruber might actually be happening.

In an interview with The Wrap to promote his new show The Last Man on Earth, Will Forte said MacGruber 2 has a "realistic shot" at being made, and said that after his new show it's his number one priority.

The success of The Last Man on Earth will determine how long we have to wait for the comedy sequel, however. Forte said that if his show is able to get a second season, MacGruber would have to wait until after they're finished with that. But some work has apparently already been done on the movie, and Forte said they have a loose outline of the first few acts.

Forte also said that all of the cast members from the first MacGruber would likely return for the sequel.

It's pretty strange that a sequel to MacGruber is actually a significant possibility. The first film was a box office bomb, receiving mixed reviews and grossing only $9 million on a $10 million budget, according to Box Office Mojo. It had an opening weekend gross of just $4 million, making it the second-lowest wide release of that year. After three weeks, the movie was removed from theaters completely.

However, since then the movie has gained something of a cult following, and it's possible the movie has made enough from home video sales to justify a followup.

MacGruber was based on the Saturday Night Live sketch which was a parody of MacGyver. It starred Will Forte and Kristen Wiig and was directed by The Lonely Island's Jorma Taccone.

Forte's new show, The Last Man on Earth, premieres this Sunday at 8pm on Fox.
