Thomas Edison biopic in the works under Bad Robot

As seen by Best Picture-nominees The Theory of Everything and The Imitation Game, audiences love seeing British inventors and geniuses sing on the big screen. That's why J.J. Abrams has taken his banner Bad Robot and decided to make a Thomas Edison biopic with Paramount Pictures.

The Wrap got the report. It makes sense Edison would get his story on the big screen, as the inventor is credited as one of the fathers of cinema. He invented the motion picture camera in addition to the long-lasting light-bulb and the phonograph. He is also the man who brought electricity to millions of Americans.

The untitled film plans to depict the man, according to reports, as a rugged eccentric genius. In addition to Abrams, Bryan Burk is produces the movie for Bad Robot.

Don't confuse this picture with the other Edison biopic The Current War, which The Weinstein Company developed for the past year or so with Ben Stiller attached to direct at one point, as The Hollywood Reporter covered at the time. That film would focus on "The Wizard of Menlo Park" as he pits himself against George Westinghouse. Word on the film has been quiet since then. Perhaps The Secret Life of Walter Mitty's failure is perhaps the case of that movie's downfall?

Work on the film is in the very, very early stages, with no actors, director, screenwriters or name announced or planned. Though, of course, this is just one of many high-profile projects in the works for Bad Robot. There's, of course, that new Star Wars as well as Mission: Impossible V, Star Trek 3 and Dan Trachtenberg's The Cellar, among other films.
