Sacramento Kings hire George Karl as coach

The Sacramento Kings hired George Karl as their new coach on Thursday.

According to Yahoo Sports, the deal is for four years and $14.5 million. There is a $1.5 million buyout provision on the $5 million that Karl will make in the final year of the contract. Karl will make $1.25 million the rest of this season. Next year he will make $3.25 million and he will make $5 million in the final two years of the contract. Karl will make his debut with the Kings after the All-Star break.

Karl becomes the third coach of the Kings this season. In December the Kings fired Michael Malone after an 11-13 start. Tyrone Corbin took over after Malone was fired but had very little success. The Kings dismissed Corbin as coach on Thursday.

Karl hasn’t coached since the 2012-13 season when he coached the Denver Nuggets. That season he was the NBA Coach of the Year. The Nuggets made the playoffs in all nine season under Karl. As a coach with the Cleveland Cavaliers, Golden State Warriors, Seattle Sonics, Milwaukee Bucks, and the Nuggets, Karl has 1,131 wins, according to Fox Sports. He is one of nine NBA coaches to have 1,000 wins. He is the sixth winningest coach in NBA history.

The Kings are 18-34 and are headed to their ninth straight losing season.
