Robert De Niro pays $6.4 million tax lien, lawyer confirms

Actor Robert De Niro was forced to pay $6.4 million to the IRS after he was hit with a tax lien. Considering that he has that kind of money, he paid it off the moment he heard about it, his lawyer said Thursday.

The Smoking Gun first reported that the IRS sent a report to the NYC Department of Finance to report that the Silver Linings Playbook actor owed $6,410,449.20 in connection with his 2013 filing. The lien was issued on Feb. 3 and lists De Niro’s Tribeca condominium, which the government would have gone after if he didn’t pay his debt.

De Niro’s lawyer, Tom Harvey, told the New York Daily News that the IRS had initially sent the bill to the wrong address. The actor’s spokesman, Stan Rosenfield, said that it was delivered to “an old address, currently an unoccupied commercial building.”

“Once Mr. De Niro learned of this tax delinquency, he had a check for the full amount hand-delivered to the IRS this morning,” Rosenfield added.

De Niro is a two-time Oscar winner and was recently seen in Grudge Match with Sylvester Stallone. He is currently filming Joy, which reunites him with Silver Linings Playbook star Jennifer Lawrence and director David O. Russell.
