New Line brings 'Shaft' back to the movies again

Shaft will soon return to the big screen. The legendary Richard Roundtree character is set to reprise his cinematic glory thanks to New Line Cinema.

Producer John Davis (Predator) shepards this new revival, as The Wrap reports, which he will make under his Davis Entertainment banner. This comes after the studio acquired the rights to the '70s property not long ago.

It's not decided who will play the character, embodied by both Roundtree originally and Samuel L. Jackson, as his nephew John Shaft, in Paramount's 2000 reboot. With racial tension high in America thanks to Ferguson, Trayvon Martin and Eric Garner, the article predicts the studio is doing this to capitalize on the property in a time when it is not only needed but wanted.

This is just one of several reboots New Line and Davis, respectively, have in the works or made. New Line is or has continued working on revitalization to the Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th franchises, as well as their upcoming reboot to Vacation, starring Ed Helms.

Davis, meanwhile, worked on both the original Predator and its 2010 reboot Predators, and has The Man from U.N.C.L.E., David O. Russell's Joy and Victor Frankenstein set for release this year.
