Milwaukee Bucks to buyout Larry Sanders

The Milwaukee Bucks are close to reaching an agreement to buyout center Larry Sanders.

The Bucks are using the NBA’s stretch provision which will give them extra salary cap space this summer. Sanders and the Bucks should officially part ways by the end of the week. Sanders will likely get about half of the $33 million left on his contract after this season in increments spread out over the next several years, according to ESPN. He will become a free agent before March 1, so he can play for another team once he’s formally waived.

The buyout comes after Sanders had to deal with personal issues and a suspension. Last month he was suspended for ten games for violating the NBA’s anti-drug program. The suspension was Sanders’ second in less than a year. He was suspended for the final five games of the 2013-14 season.

Sanders signed a four-year, $44 million contract extension in 2013. He has played in just 50 games since getting the extension. He has not played since December 23, and sat out 11 games before he was suspended for personal reasons. He has already forfeited more than $1 million of his $11 million salary this season. Sanders is averaging 7.3 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 1.4 blocks in 27 games this season, according to Sports Illustrated. He hasn’t played since returning from his suspension.

The Bucks are currently 30-23 and in sixth place in the Eastern Conference, two games behind the Cleveland Cavaliers.
