Nicolas Winding Refn from (Drive) is in full swing with his next project, The Neon Demon. With production set to start late next month, he's gearing up his cast, and it looks like he got some heavy hitters to fill in supporting roles.
Variety reports Keanu Reeves, Christina Hendricks, Jena Malone of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, Bella Heathcote of Dark Shadows and his Drive co-star Abbey Lee are all set to play roles in the female-driven horror film. They join Elle Fanning, who has been attached to lead for the past month.
In addition to these casting announcements, Variety reports The Neon Demon also returns Refn with his editor Matthew Newman and his composer Cliff Martinez. Newman edited all of the director's films since 2008's Bronson, while this marks Martinez's third collaboration with Refn in a row behind Drive and Only God Forgives.
Also reunited with Refn for this project is producer Lene Borglum, who worked on Valhalla Rising and Only God Forgives, through his company Space Rocket. Joining Refn for the first time, however, is Academy Award-nominated cinematographer Philippe Le Sourd of The Grandmaster.
Gaumont and Wild Bunch, who worked with Refn on his last feature, sold and will fiance The Neon Demon and are currently shopping the project now to U.S. buyers at the Berlin International Film Festival. Discussions have apparently already started.
Filming begins on March 30, for the horror flick. While these other performers, besides Lee, never worked with the director before, Hendricks also previously starred in Drive. Written by Refn and Mary Laws, The Neon Demon, originally titled I Walk with the Dead, is one the director has brewed for years. It centers on an aspiring model, played by Fanning, getting caught in a world of beauty and demise.
So far, no reports have indicated who exactly Reeves, Hendricks, Malone, Heathcote and Lee play in the feature.
Hendricks, in addition to starring in the final season of AMC's Mad Men, has Ryan Gosling's Lost River and Dark Places coming out this year. She also stars in Cameron Crowe's Showtime pilot Roadies.
Reeves, meanwhile, recently starred in Knock Knock at Sundance as well as The Whole Truth and Daughter of God out later this year.
Malone appears in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay-Part 2 and Bottom of the World this year.
As for Heatcote, his got Pride and Prejudice and Zombies and The Curse of Downers Grove are set to come out.
Lee, with her only finished credit being a short film from 2011, stars in Mad Max: Fury Road and Ruben Guthrie coming to theaters in 2015 as well.
