Fox is developing a pilot based on Lucifer, a DC Comics/Vertigo character about the Lord of Hell living in Los Angeles. The project will star Tom Ellis in the title role.
The series centers on an unhappy Lucifer, who decides to abandon hell to move to Los Angeles. There, he joins the police to stop criminals.
According to Variety, the pilot was written by Tom Kapinos (Californication), who will executive produce with Jerry Bruckheimer, Len Wiseman (Underworld) and Jonathan Littman. Wiseman is directing the pilot.
Lucifer debuted in Neil Gaiman’s acclaimed Sandman series and was created by Gaiman, Sam Keith and Mike Dringenberg. Mike Carey wrote Lucifer’s solo series.
Of course, this is just one of the many DC Comics series in the works. CBS is working on Supergirl and The CW is looking to make a third series to join The Flash and Arrow. In addition, TNT is working on Teen Titans and NBC tried out Constantine. The CW’s iZombe (another Vertigo property) debuts in March.
As for Ellis, he recently starred in USA Network’s short-lived series Rush and appeared in NBC’s Gothica pilot a couple of years ago.
