David Beckham, UNICEF launch new 7 fund to help children in danger

David Beckham may have retired from soccer, but that doesn’t mean he’s keeping a low profile. Beckham has launched a new initiative with UNICEF to help raise funds for children around the world who are in danger.

The new fund, called 7:The David Beckham UNICEF Fund was announced today, marking Beckham’s 10th anniversary as a UNICEF goodwill ambassador. He hopes to use his connections as an international celebrity to help raise funds and convince world leaders that children need help, too.

“I’ve been a Goodwill Ambassador for 10 years now and I feel so honoured to be part of UNICEF’s amazing work for children,” Beckham said in a statement. He explained that the new fund “represents my ongoing commitment to helping children who need it most around the world. This is me stepping up my support - because I can, because I want to, because the outcome will help change the lives of millions of children.”

The fund is named after the lucky number Beckham wore for England and Manchester United FC.

It also comes at a very important time for children around the world. UNICEF said that over 15 million children lived during extreme violence in conflicts in 2014. Others faced natural disasters and still more were out of school and orphaned by the Ebola epidemic. UNICEF also noted that there are 168 million children around the world in child labor and others are victims of sexual violence.
