Common explains shutting out Oprah when he won the Oscar and she went to high five him

Common is still riding the celebration train after winning an Oscar with John Legend for their song “Glory” from Selma, and he stopped by Jimmy Kimmel Live on Thursday night.

While there, he talked about the moment their names were called – yes, their real names, which started some confusion – and unintentionally dissing Oprah.

Oprah had both hands up as she was going in for a high five, but Common just sort of grazed her arm and went in to hug Selma star David Oyelowo instead, MTV News reports.

“You’re just so in the moment, that I saw David Oyelowo first, and I was going to him,” he explained “I was wondering if Oprah was really facing John — so I didn’t know if this high five was for me or for John, so I just went safe.”

Kimmel joked it’s probably “against the law” to do that to Oprah, and Common assured he called her the next day to assure her he didn’t do it on purpose.

“I made sure I talked to her the next day,” he said. “We talked the next day and it was like, ‘You know I wasn’t tryna play you out.’”
