Eddie Redmayne had to make one drastic transformation to win his first Best Actor Oscar and now he has to make yet another. In his next film, the Theory of Everything star plays transgender Danish painter Lili Elbe in Tom Hooper’s The Danish Girl.
Working Title wisely posted the first picture of the production earlier today, showing Redmayne as Elbe. “The film is currently in production,” the studio noted.
The Danish Girl was first announced in April 2014. It reunites Redmayne with Hooper, who directed him in Les Miserables. It is based on David Ebershoff’s novel and is about Einar Wegener and his wife. The painter became the first man to undergo a sex change and became known as Lili Elbe.
Alicia Vikander will play Wegener’s wife, Gerda. Amber Heard is also starring.
The Danish Girl will be Hooper’s first film since Les Mis. He is best known for the 2010 Best Picture winner The King’s Speech, which also earned him an Oscar for directing.
As for Redmayne, he won an Oscar on Sunday for The Theory of Everything, which required him to play Stephen Hawking before and after he was stricken with ALS.
