Charlotte Hornets acquire Mo Williams from Timberwolves

The Charlotte Hornets acquired guard Mo Williams in a trade with the Minnesota Timberwolves on Tuesday.

Williams isn’t the only player going to the Hornets. The Timberwolves are also sending guard Troy Daniels to the Hornets. The Hornets are sending guard Gary Neal and a 2019 second-round draft pick to the Timberwolves, according to Yahoo Sports. Williams is in the final year of his contract. Daniels will make $947,276 next season, the Associated Press notes.

"We are excited to be adding two quality players to our organization," Hornets general manager Rich Cho said in a statement. "Mo Williams is a proven NBA player who gives us additional versatility and depth in the backcourt, both while Kemba Walker is out and after Kemba returns."

Timberwolves coach Flip Saunders said in a statement that this was a difficult decision and that they were moving in a different direction with their young players. He went on to thank Williams and Daniels for their contributions and wished them luck with the Hornets.

Williams was a reserve for the Portland Trail Blazers last year. He has played in 19 games this season for the Timberwolves, filling in for the injured Ricky Rubio. This season he is averaging 12.2 points, and 6.4 assists in 41 games, according to ESPN. Daniels is averaging 2.8 points in 19 games. Neal is averaging 9.6 points in 43 games.

The Timberwolves also acquired rookie power forward Adreian Payne from the Atlanta Hawks for a lottery-protected first-round draft pick in 2017 on Tuesday.

The Hornets are currently tied for seventh place in the Eastern Conference with a 22-29 record.
