Bruce Lee biopic in the works, daughter producing

The legendary Bruce Lee is getting a biopic, with the full involvement of his family. Shannon Lee, his daughter, will be the driving force behind it.

While Universal did make a biopic on Lee back in 1993, Lee believes that there is enough room left in her father’s life story to explore in a potential new movie. The new film will be a partnership between Bruce Lee entertainment, Lawrence Grey (Last Vegas), Ben Everard and Janet Yang (The Joy Luck Club), notes Variety.

“There have been projects out there involving my father, but they’ve lacked a complete understanding of his philosophies and artistry,” Lee explained to Deadline. “They haven’t captured the essence of his beliefs in martial arts or storytelling.”

“The only way to get audiences to understand the depth and uniqueness of my father is to generate our own material and find amazing like-minded partners to work with…many don’t know that Bruce Lee was also a prolific writer and a creator of his own unique art and philosophy,” Lee continued. “That’s what we want to show, not just his kick-ass physicality, but the depth of his character and beliefs.”

Bruce Lee died in 1973 and was only 32, but he remains a cultural icon in China and around the world. Lee, who was four when her father died, clearly wants to show another side of the Enter The Dragon star that few have ever seen.

Universal had tackled Bruce Lee’s story in 1993 with Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story, which starred Jason Scott Lee.
