'American Idol' Recap - Showcase #2

So the good news is that we have a top 24 and next week we’ll get to the best part of American Idol: the live performances. The bad news is that there was very little singing in tonight’s episode, so much so that I’m going to try and keep my comments as brief as songs themselves.

Joey Cook
Sporting a new hair color, Joey stays true to herself (and her uke) despite the Idol stage. Not sure America as a whole will buy her, but I’m a fan.

Katherine Winston
I originally called this hippy chick with hummingbird-like vibrato a “quiet little gem.” I’m not sold yet, but I’m dismissive either.

Alexis Gomez
Her Spanish-language take on country is intriguing although I’m not sure Alexis has the charisma to pull it off.

Quentin Alexander
I don’t know the song he sang, but it fit him like a glove.

Savion Wright
Saivon has great stage presence and great musicality. He’s one of my favorites.

Mark Andrew
Mark’s “Take Me To Church” felt listless and lacking the fire-and-brimstone passion that the song needs.

Trevor Douglas
Here’s another one the teen Idol watchers might love. But unlike Daniel, I’m totally for Trevor going through. His House of Blues performance was a bit too wild and uncontrolled, but I’m excited for what’s to come.

Nick Fradiani
I really want to like Nick, mostly because we both come from the same small Connecticut town, but I just find him somewhat bland.

Sarina-Joi Crowe
Sarina-Joi took great risks with her vocal phrasing and did a killer job.

Qaasim Middleton
He’s a larger-than-life charismatic performer and, while not the best vocalist in the bunch, is totally dynamic and fun to watch.

Riley Bria
With a lanky, teen model look and a young Keith voice, Riley might become a country standout.

Shi Scott
Shi has a very unique voice, but I wish she’d open up vocally a little bit and relax more.

And Those Who Didn’t Make It:

Josh Sanders
Hollywood Anderson*
Maddy Hudson
Jaq Mackenzie
Hunter Larson
Emily Brooke
Ricky Dale Hendricks
Jelly Joseph
