The songs of Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Lowe will be heard on Broadway once again. Gigi, starring Vanessa Hudgens in the title role, will open in April.
Hudgens, a former Disney star, got the role in September, when producers announced that they plan to take the musical to Washington, D.C. for a pre-Broadway run at the Kennedy Center. Those performances will begin on Jan. 16.
Producers told The New York Times today that they will open the musical on Broadway on April 8. It will take over the Neil Simon Theater, which will be empty after Sting’s The Last Ship closes on Jan. 24.
Gigi will also star Victoria Clark (The Light in the Piazza), Corey Cott (Newsies), Howard McGillin, Dee Hoty and Steffanie Leigh. Eric Schaeffer (Follies) will direct and Joshua Bergasse (On The Town) is handling choreography.
The producers also hired Call the Midwife’s Heidi Thomas to write a new book in place of Lerner’s original. Hopefully Thomas’ work will correct some of the criticisms of Lerner’s 1973 book.
Gigi is based on the Colette novel and Vincente Minnelli’s classic 1958 musical, which won the Best Picture Oscar. Songs include “Thank Heaven For Little Girls,” “The Night They Invented Champagne,” “Gigi” and “I Remember It Well.”
You can get tickets for the Washington D.C. performances at GigiOnBroadway.com.
Hudgens was recently seen in Spring Breakers and starred in Disney’s High School Musical movies.
