The Texas Rangers acquired right-handed pitcher Yovani Gallardo on Monday in a trade with the Milwaukee Brewers.
The Brewers will get shortstop Luis Sardinas and right-handers Corey Knebel and Marco Diplan from the Rangers in the trade. The Brewers used their $13 million team option on Gallardo on October 30. However Gallardo’s contract has a trade kicker in it which increases his salary to $14 million, according to Fox Sports. The Brewers will $4 million of Gallardo’s salary this year. Gallardo will be eligible for free agency in November, but there is interest on both sides for a long deal.
''It definitely means a lot. I grew up here, went to high school here,'' Gallardo said. 'I'm very excited for this opportunity and looking forward to it.''
Brewers general manager Doug Melvin said in a statement that Gallardo was a big part of the Brewers organization and one of the best pitchers in the history of the team. While the Brewers will miss Gallardo, they are excited about their new additions.
Gallardo was the Brewers second-round pick in the 2004 amateur draft. He made his major league debut in 2007 with the Brewers. Last year he was 8-11 with a 3.51 ERA in 32 starts, according to the Associated Press. In his eight-year career with the Brewers Gallardo is 89-64 with a 3.69 ERA.
The Brewers were 82-80 last year and missed the playoffs. The Rangers lost 95 games last year, the most loses for the Rangers since 1985, and finished last in the AL West. They are hoping that new manager Jeff Banister and their new additions can turn things around.
