Sergei Bobrovsky signs extension with Columbus Blue Jackets

Columbus Blue Jackets goalie Sergei Bobrovsky signed a four-year contract extension with the team on Friday.

Bobrovsky was going to be a free agent on July 1 had a deal not been reached. The extension eliminates any concerns the Blue Jackets would have had in the off-season about signing Bobrovsky. Bobrovsky is now signed through the 2018-19 season. The deal is reportedly worth $29.7 million with a cap hit of $7.425 million, according to ProHockey Talk. Only Henrik Lundqvist of the New York Rangers will have a higher cap hit among NHL goalies with a $8.5 million cap hit.

“A common thread of every successful team in our league is outstanding goaltending and we believe we have one of the best at the position in the world in Sergei Bobrovsky,” Blue Jackets general manager Jarmo Kekalainen said in a release. “He is a tremendous person and a very talented player whose work ethic sets the tone for our team. We are very happy to have him signed for the next four years.”

In June of 2012 Bobrovsky was traded to the Blue Jackets by the Philadelphia Flyers. Bobrovsky is 68-41-13 with a 2.34 goals-against average and a .924 save percentage and ten shutouts since joining the Blue Jackets, according to NHL.com. He is 110-64-23 with a 2.50 goals-against average, a .918 save percentage and has ten shutouts in his career.

Bobrovsky isn’t the only player to sign an extension with the Blue Jackets. Ryan Johansen and breakout star Nick Foligno have also signed extensions with the Blue Jackets.
