Kansas City Royals manager Ned Yost agreed to a one-year contract extension with the team on Tuesday.
This year was the final year of Yost’s contract. He is now signed through the 2016 season. Yost is the longest tenured manager in Royals history. He became the Royals manager in May 2010 after Trey Hillman was fired. Yost has managed 775 games for the Royals, passing Dick Howser’s 770 games managed, according to the Kansas City Star. He is fine with the one-year extension.
“Dayton’s got this year and next year, and that’s all I wanted …” Yost said. “One extra year, I’m happy with that.”
Yost has been a manager for 11 seasons. He led the Royals to a 89-73 record last year and their first playoff appearance in 29 years. The Royals won the AL title but lost to the San Francisco Giants in the World Series. Yost has a 373-402 record with the Royals, which puts him third on the Royals all-time win list behind Howser (404) and Whitey Herzog (410), according to MLB.com. In 11 seasons he has a career record of 830-904. His win total is tied for 73rd all-time and he ranks seventh among active major league managers.
Yost had previously said that he wanted to manage for two or three more seasons before he would consider retiring.
