Raiders hire former Broncos DC Jack Del Rio as new coach

The Oakland Raiders have hired Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio as their new head coach. The team announced the hiring on Thursday.

Del Rio replaces interim coach Tony Sparano. Sparano became coach when Dennis Allen was fired early in the season.Sparano was 3-9 as the interim coach. Del Rio becomes the Raiders ninth head coach since the start of the 2003 season, according to the Associated Press. In addition to Del Rio the Raiders also interviewed former New York Jets and Cleveland Browns coach Eric Mangini, Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur, Indianapolis Colts offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton, Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator Darrell Bevall, and former Broncos coach Mike Shanahan.

''After a thorough interview and evaluation process, we are excited to announce Jack Del Rio as the head coach of the Oakland Raiders,'' Raiders owner Mark Davis said in a statement. ''I have no doubt that he will make a significant impact and help reach the goal of everyone in this building, which is to win championships.''

The Broncos hired Del Rio after the 2011 season when Allen left for the Raiders. Del Rio’s Broncos defense was number three in total defense this season and led the league in forcing three-and –outs. This isn’t the first time that Del Rio will be a head coach. He was the head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars from 2003 to 2011, had a 68-71 record and made the playoffs twice, according to ESPN. In 2013 he was the interim coach for the Broncos when John Fox had health issues.

Del Rio will try to turn things around with the Raiders. The Raiders have the worst record in the NFL since 2003, failing to produce a winning season and make the playoffs.
