O-Town returns with brand new music and direction (Exclusive Interview)

O-Town was at the top of the boy band hype when they formed back on MTV’s Making The Band in 2000. They released hit singles like “All or Nothing” and “Liquid Dreams” but it wasn’t until this past year that the band seemed to find their own voice, direction and connection with fans that have loved them for fifteen years.

O-Town is celebrating a brand new album, Lines & Circles and reconnecting with fans on the road. The band is grateful for this second chance in the music industry and recognizes that they are doing things differently this time around.

“It was very different, it was over ten years ago and we had the big machine behind us. We had a record label, and the support of Clive Davis and we still had Making the Band. This is in like a lot of ways an independent project and we do everything ourselves. From the design, to the management, you name it we do it. We get to shape everything that we are doing and the last time around we didn’t. It wasn’t that kind of a process,” explained Jacob Underwood from O-Town.

The band first released “Skydive” as an independent single but fan reception was so great that the group moved forward with writing and working on an entire album. Fans have been able to see the group perform at a variety of venues in 2014 but the band has plans to do a larger tour in support of the album and are looking forward to connecting with their fans that have connected with their new music as much as the older pop singles.

“We still get the biggest reaction for “All or Nothing” but to see them singing along to every single word on the new album that is incredible. To see that they have listened to the new album and memorized every word, it’s awesome. It’s a lot of fun.”

In a time when pop music is still climbing the charts and boy bands like One Direction are musical powerhouses, it’s refreshing to see O-Town take control of their music and their own direction. They are proving that an original, less controlled way is still connecting with their fans and their music is only improving through that new and more organic process.

Chelsea Lewis from TheCelebrityCafe.com was able to interview O-Town and discuss everything from their latest album Lines & Circles, to what it is like with the group now being only four members instead of a five member group. The entire interview is below.

C: You guys have been out of the musical spotlight for a while and when you returned fan noticed that the band had changed member wise and felt like a whole new group…how was life been as a quartet?

O-Town: [Jacob] One of the things I repeat a lot is that I know that everyone wishes they could go back in life and do things differently knowing what you know now. My dad has said that we have been given the chance to go back and do it again so not to mess it up! We feel blessed; this is the most fun we have ever had together. We are pretty excited.

C: What was it like going from your first album to Lines & Circles? How was the process different?

O-Town: It was very different, it was over ten years ago and we had the big machine behind us. We had a record label, and the support of Clive Davis and we still had Making the Band. This is in like a lot of ways an independent project and we do everything ourselves. From the design, to the management, you name it we do it. We get to shape everything that we are doing and the last time around we didn’t. It wasn’t that kind of a process.

C: How has the fan reception been to the new album?

O-Town: We still get the biggest reaction for “All or Nothing” but to see them singing along to every single word on the new album that is incredible. To see that they have listened to the new album and memorized every word, it’s awesome. It’s a lot of fun.

C: Do you all have favorite tracks off of the new album?

O-Town: One of our favorites is new single, “Chasing After You” it’s just a great song with great energy. It’s like a song that we have never had before and we are shooting a video in February and are excited to let people experience that.

[Eric]: “Lines & Circles,” it’s a song that has an energy and these songs are commercial for folks who haven’t really been exposed to O-Town. It has a different feel and hopefully a different perspective.

C: Any plans for more music or a tour?

O-Town: [Eric] I think we want to get back into the studio but there is still so much life to this album and there are so many sweet gems to the songs and exposure the world too.
