Martin Scorsese's latest Silence has a long history towards production, but it appears things are finally coming together for the new movie. The latest Scorsese movie officially has secured funding, and will start production on January 30 in Taiwan.
In a press release, found on Collider, Fábrica de Cine and SharpSword Films announced they came on-board to produce and provide funding for Scorsese's latest, his follow-up to his Oscar nominated The Wolf of Wall Street. They will manage the film under their joint entity, FM Films, LLC. Scorsese, in addition to directing, produces the new movie alongside Emma Tillinger Koskoff, Randall Emmett, Irwin Winkler and Barbara DeFina.
Additionally, this press release was the first to announce its official production start date, with the movie starting pre-production back in November. Starring Andrew Garfield, Liam Neeson and Adam Driver, Paramount picked up distribution rights back in November for a hopeful November release. Of course, this is what happened with Wolf, but it ended up getting pushed back to Christmas. This movie reunited Scorsese with his Gangs of New York screenwriter Jay Cocks.
Based on the book by Shusaku Endo, Scorsese has tried getting Silence off the ground for twenty years. It revolves around two 17th-century Jesuit priests (Garfield and Driver) who travel to Japan to investigate claims of religious persecution, trying to determine if their mentor (Neeson) broke from the church. Scorsese has promised to make this his next movie for years, but continued to push back the production date to work on films like The Departed, Shutter Island, Hugo and The Wolf of Wall Street. The producers have even went as far as to sue the Oscar-winning filmmaker for not making this movie back in 2012.
“I’ve wanted to make Silence for almost two decades, and it is finally a reality," Scorsese said. "It is heartening to have adventurous partners like Fabrica and Sharpsword to work with on this picture."
In addition to this, Scorsese also directed a short film/casino commercial with Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro and also directed a pilot for an untitled rock & roll HBO series which he is executive producing alongside Mick Jagger. If that weren't enough, Mark Wahlberg wants the man to direct a Boardwalk Empire movie too.
