Rapper J. Cole has decided to give back to his community in a unique way. He is going to turn his childhood North Carolina home into a rent-free home for single mothers.
The home’s address, 2014 Forest Hills Drive, served as the title for his newest album, which debuted at the top of the Billboard 200 chart in December. The cover features him sitting on the home’s roof.
In an interview today, he talked about his childhood with The Combat Jack Show and how he decided to buy the home years after his mother lost it. Rather than let the home become a tourist trap for Cole fans, he’s decided to do something much, much better.
“What we gon’ do, we still working it out right now, obviously it’s a detailed, fragile situation I don’t wanna play with,” he explained, reports The Urban Daily. “My goal is to have that be a haven for families. So every two years a new family will come in, they live rent-free.”
Cole hopes that the home will be perfect for mothers with multiple children, who might be forced to share a room otherwise.
“I want her kids to feel how I felt when we got to the house,” Cole further explained.
Cole later discussed his struggles, including times when he was broke. However, his faith always helped pull him through the worst in life.
“Even though I was living in the future I was living so hopeful in the future. I had faith,” he said. “It was hope and faith. I was appreciating the journey because I was sure of what was to come.”
