In the season 4 premiere of Girls, Hannah celebrates her next big life step with her loving parents and dramatic Adam at dinner together. Adam arrives late from an audition, though his toast to Hannah is seemingly supportive you can detect a hint of sarcasm and dismal emotions in his voice. Adam and Hannah are still together being as supportive as they can be for one another. Hannah, now possessing the attitude that people have to take any job they can get because they need to survive, puts a smile on her face while watching Adam’s commercial for an anti-depressant drug, Torpica. Adam being a dramatic actor/artist isn’t impressed with the commercials outcome.
Jessa still attending to Beadie meets her daughter, Rikki, who calls her a dumbass for helping her mother try and commit suicide. Rikki makes it apparent that she believes that Jessa and everyone else her age are too selfish and unmotivated to live in the real world. Jessa and Beadie have a sentimental goodbye showing that Jessa really does have a heart.
Shoshanna finally graduates from NYU but not in the traditional sense. She meets her parents, both named Mel at the Bursars office and places an order for her diploma. Her divorced parents act hostile towards one another fighting for Shoshanna’s attention, yet giving her none.
Marnie and her singing/writing partner, Desi, have begun an intimate relationship with one another. Then later at their first gig, Clementine shows up and is still very much with Desi’s girlfriend. Clementine apologizes for being a crazy girlfriend in which Marnie responds with confidence but lacks the dignity to admit that she is having an affair with Desi, and even goes on to talk herself up saying that she of all people would never stoop so low to have an affair with a guy who is already in a relationship.
At the gig Jessa acts rude toward Hannah, which Hannah calls her out. Jessa explains that Hannah had begged Jessa to stay in the city and now she’s moving to Iowa and sees it as Hannah giving up on trying to live in the real world.
Ray shows up at Marnie’s gig and Shoshanna and him are finally able to have closure as Shoshanna apologizes for being manipulating. Untypical of Ray gives Shoshanna a long comforting hug.
Elijah shows up at the gig still miserably happy living the dream of a New Yorker where unexpected things still happen to him everyday like saving a kitten and running into his ex boyfriend.
During Marnie and Desi’s performance children start to boo her. In typical Marnie fashion, she runs out of the restaurant crying and shaking. Elijah comes to her rescue, but being typical Elijah calls Marnie out on her bullshit and being weak, throwing in some Judy Garland and Lady Gaga references. Exclaiming to her that she should be acting like she does not give a fuck if she wants to be in this business.
Hannah keeps prying Adam throughout the episode about being separated and how that will change their relationship. Being emotionless Adam, he responds in grunts and ignores the problem. They resolve that not having a plan is their plan. It’s obvious from the scene when they have sex that they’re not as connected as they used to be.
The next day as Hannah is leaving Adam pretends to be asleep and Marnie selflessly surprises Hannah and says goodbye to her. They have a moment together that truly shows that friends stay forever and boyfriends come and go. Being Marnie though she has a moment where she makes the situation about herself and cries to Hannah’s dad. Hannah leaves Manhattan with her parents arguing about snacks and gas.
