Emmy-nominated actress, producer, best-selling author and inspirational speaker Candace Cameron-Bure was born in Panorama City, California. The youngest of four children, Candace’s brother, Kirk, starred as trouble maker/heartthrob Mike Seaver for seven seasons on the popular ABC sitcom, Growing Pains. Deciding at a young age to pursue acting herself, she landed the role of Donna Joe “DJ” Tanner on the hit ABC sitcom Full House and has never looked back. After the series ended in 1995, Candace didn’t fade from the Hollywood spotlight, she flourished. She has starred in numerous TV movies for the Hallmark Channel and spent three years as part of the cast of the ABC Family Channel’s teen drama television series Make It Or Break It, among her other roles. In addition, Candace strongly believes in inspiring women to be all they can be, through faith, family and embracing a healthy lifestyle. TheCelebrityCafe’s Sari N. Kent had the opportunity to speak with Candace about her upcoming movie and book projects and how she balances her still active career in Hollywood with being a wife to ex-Hockey star Valeri Bure and a mother to their three children.
SNK: You have recently become involved with Ziploc. Can you tell me more about that?
CCB: Sure, with the holidays and the new year, Ziploc is a great partnership for me because it helps me organize everything with my three kids. It’s product I use everyday in my real life. Some of the things we really focus on are planning healthy meals and making foods and snacks so we don’t get caught up in the rush of time and I think it’s a great choice for our family. They have so many bags that are great and sizes that help me plan out my meals for my kids and the snacks we make at home. And of course, they have no spill containers that I use for leftovers and it’s also great because they can stack within each other when you’re not using them and are stackable in your refrigerator so they save a lot of time and space. I also use them for a lot of other things, like reorganizing my house and putting all of the Christmas stuff away in containers and storage bags. They stay protected and I use Ziploc bags for everything. Even with my son’s hockey equipment. They help me organize my life.
SNK: At 11 years old, you started playing the role of DJ Tanner on the popular sitcom, Full House. The show was on the air from 1987-1995. What was it like literally “growing up’ in front of the camera?
CCB: Obviously, I enjoyed it because I’m still in the entertainment industry today. It was just a part of my life and I loved every minute of it.
SNK: What advice, if any, do you have for young actors and actresses in the business, about gaining stardom so young and so quickly?
CCB: I think if you start young, it has to be something that comes from the child, not the parents. If you have a passion for it, then pursue it. Take classes and really learn your craft. Also, make sure that you have very good, reputable people behind you, especially your parents or guardian, that’s looking out for your best interests.
SNK: What memories, if any, do you have of being so young and being caught up in the rush of awards season? And did you ever attend any of the big award shows like the People’s Choice, the Golden Globes, etc?
CCB: I think I attended the People’s Choice Awards once because my brother [Kirk] was nominated, but that was when I was quite young. I haven’t attended any of the big awards shows.
SNK: On a personal note, when I was around six or seven years old, I had the chance to go to the People’s Choice Awards because at the time, my father worked for Disney. I remember seeing your brother, Kirk, there and I was star-struck because I just adored him on Growing Pains.
CCB: Oh, really? That’s great.
SNK: With 2015 now in full swing, did you have any New Year’s resolutions? If so, what are they and how do you plan on keeping them?
CCB: I set goals, I don’t call them ‘resolutions.’ One of my goals this year is pretty simple. I want to read more. So, I plan to read one book a month, so 12 books this year. That doesn’t include all of the scripts that I read so that’s one of my goals. Another goal of mine is always staying on track with healthy living. It’s a huge part of my life and to make sure that holds with my family and children and with my husband being a professional athlete. We are all about health and keeping on track and making decisions that way, like eating right and working out.
SNK: Your second book, “Balancing It All: My Story of Juggling Priorities and Purpose,” was published early last year. What gave you the impulse to write the book and how did you choose what its topic would be?
CCB: Well, the question was asked so often of me at interviews and when I would speak at conferences across the country. ‘How do you balance it all with working and being a wife and how do you manage it all?’ So, I was asked the question so many times, I felt it was the perfect topic to write about and why I chose to talk about my personal stories that helped me through. Things that have worked throughout my life and I think that no one can balance everything perfectly, but you learn to juggle priorities.
SNK: Which do you find more difficult – Acting or family life and why?
CCB: I wouldn’t say that one is more difficult than the other because I enjoy both of them so much. I think both have their challenges, which are unique. I’d do anything for my family. The work I do I’m incredibly passionate about and I’m in a great position. I do things I want to do, that I enjoy doing and I have the opportunity to say, ‘No’ if I don’t want to do them. *giggle*
SNK: Do any of your kids want to pursue acting?
CCB: My daughter, Natasha, wants to be in the entertainment industry. I don’t know if she will be an actress. She’s a fresh face, she has her YouTube channel and she’s pursuing singing as a career, but my boys aren’t interested, they’re interested in hockey.
SNK: Following in their father’s footsteps I see.
CCB: Exactly.
SNK: Do you have any upcoming projects that you would like to talk about?
CCB: Yes, I have a new movie series that will be on the Hallmark Movies and Mysteries Channel, called the Aurora Teagarden Mysteries, based on the best-selling books by Charlaine Harris. She also wrote all of the True Blood stories. It has a huge fan base and the first movie is going to air this spring and it’s called, A Bone to Pick and those will be shown throughout the year. I also have another movie coming out called, Mom’s Blind Date and that’s for the Hallmark Channel. I’m also releasing my third book in late summer called “Dancing Through Life: Steps of Courage and Conviction.”
