Cristiano Ronaldo wins FIFA Player of the Year

Cristiano Ronaldo was named the winner of the 2014 FIFA Ballon d’Or award on Monday. The award is for the best soccer player in the world.

Barcelona’s Lionel Messi and Bayern Munich goalie Manuel Neuer came in second and third for the award. Ronaldo got 37.66 percent of the vote, while Messi got 15.76 percent and Neuer got 15.72 percent of the vote. Ronaldo has won the Ballon d’Or award the last two years, and has won it a total of three times, according to Yahoo Sports. He had won both the Ballon d’Or and FIFA Player of the Year awards in 2008. The awards were combined in 2010 and Messi won it three times in a row.

I would like to thank all of those who voted for me," Ronaldo said. "It has been an incredible year. I would like to continue the work that I have done so far. I want to try to improve, to become better as each day goes by. I never thought that I would bring this trophy back home on three occasions. I want to become one of the greatest players of all time."

Ronaldo, who plays for Real Madrid, had a record-setting season. He scored 26 goals in 16 games in La Liga and five more goals in six Champions League games. He set a record by scoring 17 goals in the Champions League and led Real Madrid to the UEFA Champions League title, their tenth, according to ESPN. Ronaldo had a poor performance in the World Cup, scoring just once in three games as Portugal was eliminated in the group stage.

Messi was named the best player of the 2014 World Cup. Ronaldo, Messi, and Neuer were also selected for the 2014 FIFPro World XI team.
