CBS finally picks a start date for 'The Late Show with Stephen Colbert'

CBS has finally announced when Stephen Colbert will take over The Late Show. It will not be for a long time and hopefully Colbert Nation can sit tight for nine months.

The eye network said that The Late Show with Stephen Colbert will premiere on Tuesday, Sept. 8 at 11:35 p.m. It will be the first time his fans have seen him since Dec. 18, when The Colbert Report ended on Comedy Central.

“The production office is open, the premiere date is set, and we’re incredibly excited to welcome the creative and comedic genius of Stephen Colbert to CBS late night this fall,” CBS chief Nina Tassler said in a statement.

“I have nine months to make a show, just like a baby,” Colbert joked. “So first, I should find out how you make a baby.”

Colbert finished his nine-year run as Report host with two Emmy wins for Outstanding Variety Series and four Emmys wins for Outstanding Writing of a Variety series. He was previously a member of The Daily Show’s news team for eight years.

Colbert will be hosting The Late Show from the Ed Sullivan Theater, where David Letterman also hosted the show. CBS did tease in July that there would be some changes to the show’s format. It’s not clear what those changes will be, but Colbert isn’t expected to bring along his conservative pundit character to CBS.

Letterman’s final show will be on Wednesday, May 20. CBS hasn’t made any plans for the show during the interim.

James Corden is taking over CBS’ The Late Late Show on March 23.
