'American Idol' Recap - Auditions #7

A few weeks ago, I had really high hopes for this season of American Idol. The judging panel is the best configuration the show’s ever had and, under Per Blankens watchful eye, the show was turning away from the mean spirited and hokey tone that mired the show for the last few years. But in these open auditions, something made me doubt this season’s greatness. There have been good talent, sure, but there’s an overall blandness that’s pervaded the last few audition shows. Will we find a very talented singer this year? Absolutely. But will we find a star? I have my doubts. But good news is, it’s still early and, if we’re lucky, I’m dead wrong.

The top four (I couldn’t come to grips with five), in order of appearance are:

Chandler Leighton
While they played Chandler’s audition in an audition montage, her unique style shined through to be one of the best of the night. With a soft, indie vibe that was somewhere between acoustic Sara Bareilles and Birdie, Chandler’s cool take on “New York State Of Mind” was a stand-out.

Reno Anoa’i
OK, it’s too soon to call Reno the next Israel Kamakawiwo'ole but his ukulele Rod Stewart cover was really well done, if not a touch disconnected. It is probably true what Harry said, that he needs to delve deeper into his Hawaiian roots, but he’s on the right track.

Rayvon Owens
Rayvon is the real deal. With a smooth, breathy voice and a charismatic, laid-back personality, this guy could get a recording contract tomorrow.

Maddy Hudson
How in the world is Maddy 16? She’s super talented for any age, but to have such a mature instrument at such a young age is rare. Her vocal prowess is nuanced and bluesy, sort of Adele-like in a way, and her quirky personality leaps off the screen.

Others who got a golden ticket were:

- Katherine Skinner who shouldn’t be on Idol (she was far too screamy and overdone) but would be great as Hannah’s new Ohio friend on Girls.

- Erika David whose Alicia Key’s cover was sloppy and pitchy.

- Ryan Pinston whose suave voice and fast vibrato was very serviceable but very forgettable.

- Andrew Bloom who, like Ryan, had a radio friendly Maroon 5-ish voice but felt as generic as his white shirt and jeans combo.

- Kellyann Rodgers whose was nice and believable and nothing more.

- Samuel Prince who reminds me way too much of Carlito Olivero (and I don’t mean that as a compliment).
