3. They love each other, even when they lie

This may seem like an odd quality, but Snow and Charming have only lied to one another when they were attempting to protect each other. They lied out of love. In this clip, Snow tells Prince James she doesn’t love him, because King George has threatened to kill him if he runs off.

After Mary Margaret gets Regina to unknowingly kill her own mother, she can’t live with herself. She goes to Regina for judgment, but Regina lets her live. She doesn’t go through with killing Snow out of revenge, because when she ripped Snow’s heart out she sees a black spot and decides that is the best revenge of all. Later, David wants to know why Mary Margaret didn’t tell him about her heart’s black spot. In this case, she wasn’t protecting him outright, but in her own way she was protecting him from herself; the person she was afraid she would become if no redemption was possible for her.

Henry gets kidnapped and taken to Neverland. Emma, Hook, Snow, Charming, Regina, and Rumple all board Hook’s ship destined for Neverland to rescue Henry. While they are there, they are ambushed by some of the Lost Boys, who evidently dip their arrows in a deadly poison called Nightshade. During the attack Charming is wounded and will certainly die from the poison. He decides not to tell Snow when he knows there is no cure. He wants to save her that sorrow and worry for as long as possible. Hook figures it out and provides him with a solution. He can drink healing water from Neverland, but then he can never leave. He doesn’t want to tell Snow that either, at least not until they’ve saved Henry. He loves her too much to put her in a situation where she would have to choose between living in Neverland forever, or returning home with their daughter and grandson. When Snow finds out, she is livid and wants to know why David didn’t tell her about the poisoned dart.
