Sydney siege over, police say gunman and two others confirmed dead

After police stormed the Lindt Chocolate Cafe where a gunman held several people hostage for 16 hours, officials have confirmed that the gunman has been killed. Another report says that two others are dead.

The hostage situation began Monday morning local time and continued into the night. Police stormed the cafe at around 2 a.m. Tuesday morning local time. Those outside heard several loud explosions, which some believed were flash grenades.

The gunman was identified as Man Haron Monis. At the moment, it is not clear how he died, by North South Wales police have confirmed that he is dead, notes ABC News. An Australian source also told ABC News that two other people were killed.

Australia’s ABC News reports that paramedics carried people out of the cafe on stretchers. Hostages were then taken to different hospitals.

9 News in Australia reports that Monis was a radical, self-declared Muslim cleric who left Iran in 1996 and arrived in Australia. Community leader Dr. Jamal Rifi told the site that the Muslim community in Australia rejected Monis because of he claimed to be a Sheik. It’s also been reported that he has a criminal record.
