Seattle Mariners acquire outfielder Seth Smith from Padres

The Seattle Mariners acquired outfielder Seth Smith in a trade with the San Diego Padres on Tuesday.

Smith is under contract through the 2016 season. There is a team option for 2017. He will join Justin Ruggiano in right field for the Mariners. This past season Smith hit .266 with 12 homeruns and 48 RBIs, according to the Associated Press. Against right-handed pitchers Smith hit .270 and had a .815on-base slugging percentage.

"We were in search of adding another outfielder. We've got a player that's a professional hitter, a guy that we think is going to give us really good (at-bats) especially against right-handed pitching," Mariners general manager Jack Zduriencik said. "One of the things we try and stay away from is giving up talent for one-year returns."

The Padres will get right-handed reliever Brandon Maurer in the trade. Maurer was originally a starter for the Mariners last season. However he was moved to the bullpen. Last season he made 31 relief appearances, had a 2.17 ERA and 38 strikeouts in 37 relief innings, according to ESPN.

The trade was a result of Smith not having a spot in the Padres outfield. This offseason the Padres have acquired Matt Kemp, Justin Upton, and Wil Myers. Those acquisitions left no room for Smith in the Padres outfield.
