The Washington Redskins placed quarterback Colt McCoy on injured reserve on Tuesday. McCoy is out with a sprained neck.
The injury happened two games ago in the fourth quarter against the St. Louis Rams. McCoy then aggravated the injury during the first drive in last Sunday’s game against the New York Giants. He had tests done at the hospital on Monday. Doctors told him that it would be best if he didn’t play again this season and that he should be fully healthy in a couple of weeks, according to the Associated Press. Robert Griffin III replaced McCoy in both games.
''I'm pretty emotional about it, because I do feel comfortable here,'' McCoy said. ''I feel that Jay and Sean and I see eye-to-eye on a whole lot of things and see the field the same way, and I felt like there were a lot of positive things ahead for me. And I'm not saying there isn't still; I'm just frustrated that I'm not going to finish the season up with my teammates.''
He went on to add, ''I felt like we had them right where we wanted them last week, and it's just unfortunate. And it's almost hard for me to talk about because I know what good things were coming.''
McCoy, a third-round draft pick in 2010, signed a one-year, $795,000 deal with Washington in April after being the San Francisco 49ers backup quarterback. He hasn’t started a game since 2011, but has appeared in five games with four starts, and won just one of those starts. He had 91 completions for 1,057 yards and four touchdowns, three interceptions, and 66 rushing yards this season, according to the Washington Post. His 96.4 passer rating is currently the highest among Washington’s quarterbacks.
Washington promoted linebacker Jackson Jeffcoat from the practice squad to replace McCoy. McCoy has said that he would like to return to the team next year. Griffin will start Sunday’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles.
