NOAA report shows decreasing snow and ice, rising water temperatures in and around the Arctic

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration released a report on temperatures in the Arctic regions.

The NOAA found that temperatures in the air and ocean in the area will increase faster than the air temperatures around the world, according to International Business Times. It was explained in the NOAA’s Arctic Report Card for the year of 2014.

In one area of the Arctic known as the Eurasian region, the New York Times reported that the report displayed that snow coverage in the area hit a record for having the lowest amount in April, as well as below the mean snow coverage overall. The water temperature in the Chukchi Sea is also rising each decade at close to one degree Fahrenheit.

IBT also reported that scientists explained that the sea ice measurement during September was the sixth lowest on record. The eighth lowest measurements of sea ice were recorded in the past seven years. The polar bear population in Canada’s Hudson Bay has decreased over time due to the lessening sea ice.

NYT explained that the NOAA’s Arctic Report Card was published every year since 2006, studying changes in the region due to temperature increases caused by environmentally harmful emissions.
