Georgia Tech football coach Paul Johnson agreed to a contract extension on Saturday.
According to the Associated Press, the extension is for four years and Johnson is now signed through 2020. His current contract went through the 2016 season. Terms of the deal weren’t disclosed. However it is believed that the new contract puts Johnson among the four highest paid coaches in the ACC.
"I'm pleased to announce an extension of Paul Johnson's contract," Georgia Tech athletic director Mike Bobinski said. "This extension reflects our confidence in the solid foundation Coach Johnson has built for the future success of our program, which reaches beyond the field and includes increasingly strong academic achievement. I look forward to Paul Johnson's continued leadership of our football program and am excited about the possibilities in the years ahead."
Johnson was excited about the extension.
"I am excited that we were able to work out a contract extension," Johnson said. "I appreciate the support of our fans, students and alumni during my time here. My family and I are looking forward to being a part of Georgia Tech for a long time."
Johnson has been coaching at Georgia Tech for seven seasons. He is 58-34 in those seven seasons, and he led Georgia Tech to their third ACC Championship game appearance in seven seasons this year, according to ESPN. Johnson was named the 2014 ACC Coach of the Year earlier this week. It was the third time that he has named the ACC Coach of the Year.
Georgia Tech will play number two Florida State in the ACC Championship game on Saturday.
