Edward Herrmann, who is best known to audiences for playing Franklin D. Roosevelt and narrating History Channel documentaries, has died. The Emmy winner, who younger audiences should know for his role on Gossip Girl, was 71.

Herrmann’s family told TMZ that he was battling brain cancer and has been in the intensive care unit at a New York hospital for most of the past month. His health was not improving and the family decided to take him off his respirator.

His second wife, Star, told the site that he left behind three children.

Hermann was a constantly busy character actor, with over 100 credits on IMDb. He has four Emmy nominations on his resume, including two for playing President Roosevelt on the made-for-TV movies Eleanor and Franklin (1976) and Eleanor and Franklin: The White House Years (1977). He won an Emmy for his guest role on The Practice in 1999.

He played Richard Gilmore on The CW’s Gilmore Girls during its entire run. He also had a recurring role on CBS’ The Good Wife.
