Dodgers acquire Jimmy Rollins

The Philadelphia Phillies traded veteran shortstop Jimmy Rollins to the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday. The Phillies are expected to receive prospects from the Dodgers in the trade.

The trade marks the end of Rollins run with the Phillies. He had spent his entire 15 year career with the Phillies. Next year is the final year of Rollins contract and he is owed $11 million next year, according to USA Today. He had to waive his no-trade clause to accept the deal from the Dodgers.

Rollins is one of the best offensive shortstops in the game. He is a three-time All-Star and was the National League MVP in 2007. In 2008 he helped the Phillies win the World Series. This past season Rollins hit .243 with 17 homeruns, 55 RBIs and 28 stolen bases, according to ESPN. He has 453 career stolen bases, which puts him fourth among active players. Rollins is the Phillies all-time leader in hits, at-bats, and doubles.

The Dodgers had been looking for a shortstop to replace Hanley Ramirez. Ramirez, who was a free agent, signed with the Boston Red Sox last month. By signing Rollins the Dodgers have a good shortstop until top shortstop prospect Corey Seager is ready assume the big league position.
