After a summer of much anticipation as to who would be the starting quarterback of the Cleveland Browns, Brian Hoyer distanced himself from Johnny Manziel early in the season.
Over the first 11 games of the season, Hoyer played well, leading the team to a 7-4 record. Against the Buffalo Bills Sunday, Manziel replaced Hoyer in the Browns’ 26-10 loss.
Manziel rushed for one touchdown and completed five of his eight pass attempts for 63 yards.
"I showed last week I can play a little bit," Manziel said, according to Fox Sports. "I got a chance to shake the rust off and shake the nerves off a little bit."
However, as Cleveland prepares for the Indianapolis Colts this week, Manziel will retreat back to the bench because Hoyer will be the starting quarterback.
"After thorough evaluation and talking to the staff, we feel Brian gives us the best opportunity to win on Sunday," head coach Mike Pettine said, reports ESPN.com . "This is a football decision, and those are always going to be based on what we think is best for our team.”
Over the 15 year history of the Cleveland Browns franchise, Hoyer is the only starting quarterback of the 20 to post a winning record. He is 10-5 as the starter.
