Victor Martinez re-signs with Detroit Tigers

The Detroit Tigers resigned designated hitter Victor Martinez on Wednesday night.

The deal is for four years and is worth $68 million. Martinez will make $17 million a year in the deal and the deal includes some no-trade protection, Jon Heyman of CBS Sports reports, according to the Detroit Free Press. By resigning Martinez the Tigers will have $101 million in committed salary in 2018. The deal isn’t official yet because there is a physical pending.

Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski said that re-signing Martinez was their top priority this offseason. Martinez joined the Tigers before the start of the 2011 season. This year was the last year of his four year, $50 million contract with the Tigers. The Tigers had made a one-year qualifying offer worth $15.3 million to Martinez, but he declined that offer.

Martinez had the best year of his career this year. This past season he hit .335, had 32 homeruns and 103 RBIs, and a .409 on-base percentage which led the American League, according to ESPN. He won the American League’s Silver Slugger award and is a finalist for the MVP award. While with the Tigers Martinez has an average of .321, and has 58 homeruns and 298 RBIs.

Before joining the Tigers, Martinez played for the Cleveland Indians and the Boston Red Sox. He has a batting average of .306 and has 189 homeruns and 927 RBIs in his 12 year career.
