Pacers expected to sign A.J. Price

The Indiana Pacers are expected to sign free-agent point guard A.J. Price. The singing could be done today.

Initially the Pacers had wanted to sign Gal Mekel. However they have abandoned that plan due to issues with Mekel’s visa. On Wednesday the Pacers pulled out of a deal with Mekel, who is from Israel, after they learned that his visa which allows him to play in the NBA probably won’t be renewed until Friday, according to ESPN. Visa for foreign players automatically transfers when a player is traded, but paperwork must be done when a player is released and clears waivers to sign with another team. Mekel’s visa expired on October 29 after he was waived by the Dallas Mavericks.

The signing of Price will be good news for the Pacers as they have been plagued by injuries. They currently have five players including George Hill, C.J. Watson, and Rodney Stuckey out due to injuries. The Pacers have applied for a hardship exception, which allows a team to add new players if it has four roster players out beacusse of injuries for at least two weeks.

Price was a second-round draft pick for the Pacers in 2009. He played for the Pacers until 2012. In addition to the Pacers he has also played for the Washington Wizards, Minnesota Timberwolves, and the Cleveland Cavaliers. Price played in six preseason games for the Cavaliers averaging 7.2 points, and 1.5 assists, according to Yahoo Sports. He was released by the Cavaliers last week.

Price has averaged 5.9 points and 2.2 assists in his six-year NBA career.
