The Baudelaire Orphans are getting another chance at redemption in their new live action series on Netflix, A Series of Unfortunate Events.
A Series of Unfortunate Events is a popular series of young adult novels written by Daniel Handler using the pen name Lemony Snicket. The series follows the story of the three Baudelaire Orphans as they try to escape the clutches of their greedy caretaker, Count Olaf, who is after their family fortune.
“I can’t believe it,” Snicket said sarcastically to The Hollywood Reporter. "After years of providing top-quality entertainment on demand, Netflix is risking its reputation and its success by associating itself with my dismaying and upsetting books."
A film based on A Series of Unfortunate Events was released in 2004 starring Jim Carrey as the villainous Count Olaf. The movie combined the plot of the first three books in the series into one story and fans of the book series had trouble enjoying the film. The movie had a budget of $140 million and only made $209 million at the box office worldwide according to Box Office Mojo.
A sequel to the film was never made but fans of the novels eagerly anticipate Netflix to revitalize a beloved series.
