Just hours after Netflix delayed its stand-up special, NBC has officially pulled the plug on its Bill Cosby special. The movie comes as another woman came forward, accusing Cosby of rape.
As late as yesterday, NBC had not said anything official about its plans for the series, co-created by Yes, Dear star Mike O’Malley. Even now, NBC hasn’t made a statement, but Deadline is now reporting that people involved with the show were told that it isnt’ going forward.
The Cosby series was expected to debut in summer or fall 2015 and was set up at Sony Pictures TV. Cosby would have played a grandfather with daughters, helping them in their modern lives. Obviously, considering the continued public claims by five women that Cosby drugged and raped them, NBC could no longer move forward with the series.
The only reason why NBC didn’t move earlier on the series was likely money. As Variety revealed earlier this week, Cosby and NBC agreed to a big contract, where he would be paid even if the series didn’t even get to the pilot stage. At this point, executives must have just decided it was easier to write the check than deal with the ongoing publicity if the show was kept alive.
