Music app Shazam makes its way into movie theaters

The song identifying application has made its way into movie theatres thanks to a new partnership with National CineMedia.

Shazam is a mobile application that helps you identify the title and artist of a song you are hearing nearby. Once the song has been identified, you can purchase the song on Amazon or add it to your Spotify library.

“We’re thrilled to add cinema to our growing list of audio-recognition capabilities including music, television, advertising and radio, and we look forward to introducing even more innovations to Shazam at the movies,” Shazam chief product officer Daniel Danker said according to Variety.

If you go to the movies you have probably seen National CineMedia FirstLook pre-show which showcases behind the scenes previews for upcoming films. To celebrate the partnership, Shazam and National CineMedia will feature a commercial spot during the FirstLook pre-show before a movie starts and if you use the application during the spot you can be entered to win free movie tickets.

It's not quite clear how applications can enhance the movie going experience but the industry is watching. Movie theatre chain CineMark rolled out an application called CineMode which rewards moviegoers who don't use their phone during a movie with coupons.
