HBO is giving Lisa Kudrow's series The Comeback another chance at success when the show returns for its second season nine years later.
Created by Kudrow and Michael Patrick, The Comeback premiered on HBO in 2005 but was not renewed for a second season due to low ratings. The show follows the story of fictional sitcom celebrity Valerie Cherish, played by Kudrow, as she tries to regain fame by appearing on a reality television show.
Some critics argued that The Comeback was simply ahead of its time considering just a few years later, reality television shows like The Real Housewives became a staple to American culture.
"To be honest, I don't think it was that far ahead of its time. I think it was maybe a season ahead of its time, but we didn't have a second season in 2006," Kudrow told Zap2it. "Michael at one point was saying, 'It's good to be ahead of the curve, but what if we're a little too ahead of the curve?' I was like, 'That's why we're on HBO!'"
Seth Rogen also joins season 2 of The Comeback and Kudrow told Rollingstone how he joined the cast.
"Well, I had a part in Neighbors, but I didn't feel like I could just write him an email and say, ‘Hey!' But Seth said, ‘Yeah, I'm a fan of the show…I'd love to! Since it's HBO, it had to be a big star. And he was perfect."
Catch Kudrow make her comeback in the second season premiere of The Comeback November 9 on HBO.
