If the movies based on Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games aren’t real enough for you, Lionsgate has another alternative. The studio announced plans to bring the blockbuster franchise to the stage, although only in London at the moment.
The Hunger Games stage show will be produced with Dutch media company Imagine Nation and Triangular Entertainment, who will use “immersive stage techniques” to bring the story to life. Since this will be an incredibly unique experience, it will need a whole new theater, which will be built next to the famous Wembley Stadium in London. So, don’t go into this expecting a traditional play.
Robin de Levita, who won Tonys for productions of 42nd Street and Into The Woods and an Olivier for The Who’s Tommy, will be producing the show. De Levita’s most recent work is ANNE, based on The Diary of Anne Frank, a major success in Amsterdam. Imagine Nation also produced that show.
"Robin de Levita and the entire production team are the perfect partners for extending The Hunger Games franchise into a live theatrical experience," Lionsgate Chief Marketing Officer Tim Palen said in a statement. "Their creative genius, combined with world-class production values and state-of-the-art technology will provide a uniquely immersive experience for fans around the world."
The stage show will not debut until summer 2016 and could be one of the ways Lionsgate hopes to milk the franchise after Mockingjay - Part II is released in November 2015. The studio is also planning a Hunger Games theme park attraction.
As for the next film in the franchise, Mockingjay - Part I, that comes out on Nov. 21. The second half of the final movie will be out on Nov. 20, 2015.
