Lifetime producers defend their Aaliyah biopic against social media bashing

Lifetime premiered a new biopic movie about Aaliyah and the producers of the film defended the film after fans quickly jumped on social media to bash the movie.

Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B followed the story of the R&B artist Aaliyah who tragically died in a plane crash in 2001.

After its premiere, Aaliyah's former coworker Timbaland and many fans jumped on Twitter and Instagram to criticize express their ill feelings for the film that was supposed to honor the late artist.

"Biopics are hard. People have an opinion and social media allows them to voice that opinion," producer of the movie Debra Martin Chase told The Washington Post. "But at the end of the day, our goal was to make the best movie possible.”

The movie underwent a great deal of controversy before it was made and fans were upset that Aaliyah's family did not support the making of the film.

"We absolutely reached out to them, and Lifetime did too,” Executive Producer Howard Braunstein also told The Washington Post. “They chose not to cooperate with it. Hopefully they’ll enjoy it. I hope they’ll be proud.”

Aaliyah's legacy lives on through her music and many R&B artists still try to honor her today by finding unique ways to add Aaliyah's voice to their music.
