Katy Perry finally officially named Super Bowl XLIX halftime performer

The NFL announced that pop singer Katy Perry will performing during the Pepsi Super Bowl XLIX Halftime Show on Feb. 1 in University of Phoenix Stadium in Arizona, according to the association's website on Sunday.

The announcement was also released during half time of the Cowboys and Giants Sunday night.

This is the third time a female pop star has played during the show in the last four years, Madonna and Beyonce to have performed in 2012 and 2013 respectively, according to the Around the NFL writer Dan Hanzus.

Hanzus also said that Perry's involvement also continues the trend of the Super Bowl Halftime Show to not be a strictly veteran rock act, targeting younger audience with the inclusion of these pop stars.

Turning to a pop star like Katy Perry also shows a willingness to stray away from safer acts the Super Bowl has had in the past, which happened due to the wardrobe malfunction incident with Janet Jackson 10 years ago, to which Hanzus calls these acts AM (After Malfunction).

The Pepsi Super Bowl XLIX Halftime Show premieres Feb 1 on NBC.
