'How to Get Away with Murder' Recap: 'He Deserved to Die'

Thursdays nights have never been juicier thanks to How to Get Away with Murder. With only one episode left until Sam Keating’s killer is finally revealed, the suspense is growing stronger, romances are sizzling, and the drama keeps coming.

Add in a few surprise twists from last’s episode and it’s no secret why fans can’t get enough of HTGAWM. Between the scandals taking place inside the courtroom and those happening on Middleton’s campus, HTGAWM is constantly generating a lot of buzz. If you missed last night’s episode or just want to re-live your favorite moments, here’s a quick recap of what went down:

New challenges arise in Rebecca’s case.

With the public thirsty for knowledge of whether or not Rebecca—and Griffin—really killed Lila Stangard, and detective files being leaked to local newspapers, Annalise pleads for the judge to grant her a gag order, so she can better protect Rebecca's case. And while the judge agrees to Annalise’s request, that doesn’t stop the media from speculating about Rebecca and Griffin’s potential relationship status. To complicate matters even further, a motion has been filed asking for permission to exhume Lila’s body to perform a second autopsy. Annalise tries to prevent this from happening and even manages to get Lila’s mother to testify against the exhumation, but several judicial errors force the judge to allow the second autopsy to proceed.

Michaela is presented with an interesting surprise.

Overachiever Michaela is thrilled when she receives a call from prominent law firm, Sterling & White, thinking they are considering adding her to their staff after graduation. But things quickly take a turn for the worst when she gets slapped with a prenup from her fiance, Aiden’s parents. Embarrassed by this shocking turn of events, Michaela decides to keep the mishap to herself until Rebecca blurts out the truth in front of Laurel.

Laurel and Frank’s feelings for each other are further complicated.

When Laurel’s new man, Kan tells her there’s a job opening in legal aid, Laurel isn’t sure what to do. Rebecca overhears her phone conversation and blabs the news to Michaela and then also to Frank. Frank confronts Laurel about the situation, encouraging her not to let her feelings toward him hold her back. Frank says he’ll get over everything that happened between them, but Laurel isn’t sure she wants that, leaving the two to engage in a passionate make-out session.

Annalise reaches out to Nate for support.

Annalise crashes back into Nate’s life when a setback in court threatens to ruin Rebecca’s case. Annalise wants Nate to find whatever information he can that will help Rebecca, but when she makes her request, he confesses that he knows about Frank planting Lila’s phone in Griffin’s car. Nate tells Annalise he “tried to give her an out,” and she should remember that when “it all goes to hell.”

Rebecca and Wes re-connect.

A flashback from the night Sam was killed shows Rebecca covered in blood and Wes scrambling to help her before anyone gets caught. Later on, viewers witness the pair in a motel and Rebecca claims she had to act before she got killed. Wes believes her, asking her to stay put while he and the others take care of disposing Sam’s body. And later, he calls Rebecca from the gas station to let her know that he got the others to agree to erasing all of their ties to the murder. In the present day, things between the pair are tense, but once they finally talk, things heat up and they share a steamy sex scene. After their intimate moment, Rebecca makes a late-night trip to the local convenience store to pick up ice cream for herself and Wes when she runs into Nate and he asks for her help. Nate knows that Rebecca didn’t kill Lila and needs her to do whatever she can to nail Sam, since Nate believes Sam is the one who’s truly at fault.

Lila’s second autopsy reveals some surprising results.

Bonnie interrupts a moment between Annalise and Sam to let her know how Lila’s second autopsy went. Marks found on Lila’s neck were originally believed to have been caused by fingernails—a clue that was used to blame Rebecca in court—but further study shows the marks were caused by ants, which is fitting given Lila was found in a water tower. Annalise is pleased with the news, but before she can become too thrilled, Bonnie drops a major bombshell. Apparently the first autopsy wasn't conducted thoroughly enough, because the second autopsy indicated that Lila had been six weeks pregnant at the time of her death. Needless to say, Annalise doesn’t react well to this new piece of information.
