After months of speculation, HBO has finally confirmed three key cast members for the highly anticipated second season of True Detective.
The network issued a press release this afternoon, confirming that Rachel McAdams, Taylor Kitsch and Kelly Reilly will be starring in the eight-episode season. HBO also said that production has already started in California. However, there is no word on who will direct the episodes beyond episode two.
We do know that Justin Lin will helm the first two episodes. Creator Nic Pizzolatto wrote the entire season himself.
McAdams, best known for her roles in Mean Girls, The Notebook and Sherlock Holmes will star as Ventura County Sheriff’s detective Ani Bezzerides, whose ethics often conflict with the system. For old movie fans and pulp fiction fans, that last name should sound familiar. A.I. Bezzerides was a film noir writer, who wrote the scripts for Kiss Me Deadly, They Drive By Night and ON Dangerous Ground.
Taylor Kitsch, who was last seen on HBO in The Normal Heart, will star as California Highway Patrolman Paul Woodrugh, a war veteran under a microscope because of a scandal that didn’t happen.
Lastly, Kelly Reilly, also a star of Sherlock Holmes, will play the wife of Frank Seymon, Vince Vaughn’s character. She’s a former D-lister who is also his full business partner.
Colin Farrell will also star as a detective torn between the mobsters who pay him and the corrupt police he works for.
All three stars have been linked to the project for months, so none of this is particularly surprising, but it was imperative for HBO to confirm it. There had been rumors that the show might be delayed because of slow casting, but this proves that the show is moving right along.
