Elections 2014: GOP wins Senate majority, takes control of congress

Some of the biggest news out of Tuesday’s midterm elections is that the Republicans won the Senate majority for the first time in eight years and will now take control of Congress.

CNN reported that the GOP won in Iowa and Colorado as well as Montana, South Dakota, Arkansas, West Virginia and North Carolina, which were seats previously held by Democrats.

The GOP also maintained their seats in Kansas and Georgia.

As for the Democrats, the Associated Press noted that New Jersey elected Bonnie Watson Coleman to represent the state’s 12th Congressional District. She is the first African-American woman that will represent New Jersey in Congress.

Also in the Garden State, as many expected, Cory Booker defeated his GOP challenger Jeff Bell and was re-elected in the state’s U.S. Senate race. His win extends the Democrats’ winning streak in New Jersey U.S. Senate races to 38 years.

In Pennsylvania’s gubernatorial election, Tom Wolf defeated incumbent Tom Corbett.

And in New Hampshire, Senator Jeanne Shaheen held on to her seat by defeating former Massachusetts Senator Scott Brown.
