At their annual event BlizzCon, Blizzard announced a brand new video game franchise, Overwatch.
The last time Blizzard announced a brand new franchise was Diablo back in 1996. Since then, Blizzard has focused on building up its existing franchises including Warcraft, Starcraft, and Diablo.
Overwatch is Blizzard's first attempt at developing a first-person shooter game that lets two teams compete against each other, in a similar style to Valve's Team Fortress.
According to Kotaku, the new game title was inspired by various aspects of Blizzard's recently cancelled project, Titan.
With Overwatch, Blizzard hopes to make the shooter genre more accessible to players who are intimidated by the fast pace action of games like Destiny and Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare.
"We want to welcome everybody into this universe in a lot of different ways," game designer Jeff Kaplan said according to Polygon. "That also means that players will, hopefully, die less frequently than they do in modern military shooters.
The developers also mentioned that they have taken all of their past experience and lessons learned from World of Warcraft into consideration for the new game.
